About Sam

 

Sam Sharland is an artist specialising in the painted story.​​

Trained at master’s level in children’s book illustration, Sam has always been drawn to the power of pictures to tell stories. Her debut picture book Valentine's Guest House, was published in 2021. Her work blends painterly texture with simple, character-led compositions, creating prints and paintings that feel both playful and atmospheric.

Her character's are often inspired by real life moments with her own children, and have grown into a small cast of dreamers, performers and little adventurers. They were born out of a desire to create extra companions for her two girls, helping to fuel their endless imaginations. 

Her paintings and prints are made to bring warmth, imagination and a sense of narrative to the spaces they hang in. They act as little windows into stories that feel both familiar and magical.
